Object type certainty: Certain

Body sherd of an unglazed earthenware pottery vessel dating from the medieval period (1050 – 1350). Not enough of the sherd survives to be certain of the form, without this a more certain date is difficult. The sherd is most likely to be from a thin walled cooking pot. The sherd has also been burnt in an uncontrolled fire and is friable in nature. The fabric of the sherd is a relatively hard earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit, quartz and pottery (grog) inclusions. There is also a large amount of mica in the fabric. The fabric colour of the sherd is a uniform dark grey colour. Due to the smallness of the sherd the diameter of the vessel cannot be estimated. It measures 23.4mm length, 4.9mm width, is 4.2mm thick, and weighs 1.78 grams.
