Cast copper alloy Roman plate brooch. The brooch is lonzengiform with four sub-circular cupped lugs, one projecting from each corner. In the centre of the lozenge is a raised circular boss surmounted with a shallow cupped bowl - smaller than the ones forming the lugs. The shallow cup in each lug and the one in the central roundel are all stained with orange corrosive product; it is likley that they contained enamel. On the reverse are the remains of the pin hinge and sub-triangular catchplate - the pin is missing. The brooch has a rich mid brown patina and is in good overall condition. No clear parallel has been identified for this brooch although it has some similarities to items 1267A and 1656 shown in Fig.215, p.356 of Hattatt's Visual Catalogue of Ancient Brooches. This find is therefore dated stylistically to the 2nd century.
