Description of Object

A cast silver Roman spoon fragment. Only a fragment of the bowl remains, therefore the original shape is unknown. The bowl is has a concave upper surface. The underside of the bowl has a moulded rectangular ridge which leads to the stem.
The junction of the stem and bowl is forms a curvaceous 'L' shape in profile and is off-set. The stem continues from the upper edge of the junction. Both the junction and stem are rectangular in section. The upper face of the stem is decorated with two transverse grooves and a small spur which over hangs the junction. The opposite terminal of the stem is broken, and which appears to be recent damage. The surface of the fragment is tarnished and is a mottled dark grey colour.

Dimensions

The spoon measures 30.52mm long, 8.97mm wide across the bowl and 8.79mm thick across the stem and bowl junction. It weighs 2.4g.

Discussion

Crummy (Crummy, N 1983 Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman Small Finds from Excavations in Colchester 1971-9, Colchester Archaeological Trust.) illustrates similar shaped spoons which have an off-set stem for example No. 2014. Examples in silver can be seen in Hitchcock (Hitchcock, F. 2007 Treasure Annual Report 2004 D.C.M.S.), Figures 68 and 69. The diagnostic feature for dating tends to be the spoon bowl, therefore the date for this example is broad, 1st to 4th centuries.
