BROOCH

Unique ID: SOM-4FCCC6

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper alloy trumpet derivative brooch of early Roman date. The brooch measures 44.8mm by 21.2mm by 13.8mm and weighs 27.7g. The wings are incomplete but appear to have been semi-cylindrical originally, in order to hide the spring for the (missing) pin. A small amount of iron corrosion in the centre of the back of the wings suggests that the pin was made of iron. The thick bow has a rectangular cross-section and projects forward into a large knop, presumably derived from the acanthus knops on trumpet brooches. It is rather worn in places but appears to have been formerly divided into four horizontal bands, which extend around all four sides. Below this the bow narrows very gradually and terminates with a forward-projecting foot. Above the knop there is a triangular recess for enamel (a small patch of red enamel remains in situ here). Below the knop there are four further recesses. The first is also triangular and is empty. The other three are square and the upper and lower recesses contain dark blue enamel. The central recess is empty. The brooch is unusually thick and each side is decorated with two vertical grooved lines below the knop. Behind the lower bow there are the remains of a triangular catchplate.
