Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable Post Medieval or early modern date (1550 - 1800). The weight is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and profile being formed in the shape of the royal crown. The front face of the weight has an intricate designed crown which has been achieved through casting. It consists of a double jeweled band from which a double looped frame expands. Detailed floriated side fleurs are present as a fluer-de-lys shaped ornaments. At the centre of the crown is a cross formed with wedge shaped axis, above this is a much degraded plume of feathers (presumably the emblem of the Prince of Wales. Much of the detail has been lost through abrasion and corrosion. The reverse of the weight is flat with a series of vertical and horizontal channels. These channels are filled with a much corroded iron wire, which forms a frame to aid suspension. A large iron hook is present at the upper part of the weight and this may aided use or storage. The weight is a mid grey cream colour with a relatively even patina that covers all surfaces. A light active powdery corrosion product is present on some surfaces. A direct parallel for this weight has not been found. It is most likely to date from the post medieval or modern periods. It is also possible that this might have been a harness decoration, although most of these are gilt and more decorative than this example – hence the suggestion that it is a weight. The weight measures 28.4mm length, 38.4mm width, is 14.4mm thick / high and weighs 66.46 grams or 2.35ozs (1025 grains).
