An incomplete cast copper-alloy bell shaped stud dating to the Roman period, c. 43-410 AD.
The artefact comprises a circular head, decorated with two concentric rings, with a raised circular knop in the centre. Around the head of the pin there is wide, outward tapering rim. The head measures 21.6mm in diameter. Below the head there is a collar, from which extends into a rectangular-sectioned shank. The shaft is 17.1mm long, 8.6mm wide and 8.6mm thick. The total length of the object is 29.9mm. The shaft is broken at the opposite terminal to the head, leaving behind only part of the circular perforation. The break is worn and irregular. The metal is a mid greyish-green colour.
Bell Shaped Studs are a multi-purpose form of artefact, commonly found on sites in Britain dating to the Roman period. While their exact purpose is not fully understood, they are believed to have been used on furniture, doors, and caskets, such as the bronze box-plate from Walheim Germany; (Allason-Jones and McKay 1985, 30). A basic classification for these studs has been established by Allason-Jones (1985). This example falls within type 2 with a copper-alloy shank and pierced distal end.
