FINGER RING

Unique ID: CORN-712A32

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Incomplete cast copper alloy finger ring, stirrup-shaped in profile, with a rectangular bezel with five sub-circular cells or settings for stones within it, consisting of four smaller settings around one larger central setting. What remains in the base of these settings is lead oxide which was used to hold the stones, now missing, in place. "The dividers between the individual stones look asymmetrical to the extent that they would seem to be catering for slightly irregular shaped natural gems in the Medieval tradition, rather than the precisely regularised, facetted gems of the Post-medieval period" (Geoff Egan pers comm). See BUC-633791 for finger ring with similar settings. Egan and Pritchard (2002) illustrate a stirrup-shaped ring with an oval setting on page 326, Fig.215, No.1609, and another copper alloy ring with a rectangular bezel on page 328, Fig.216, No.1621, which is dated to c.1350-1400.
