A copper alloy harness pendant which dates from the medieval period. The pendant is shield shaped and is 27.1mm long, 15.5mm wide and 4.8mm thick. It has an integral projecting loop at the top which is at right angles to the pendant. The pendant is decorated with enamel which now appears red in colour, though it may not have been red originally. The spaces in the enamel suggest that the design was a heraldic one of three lions passant. A minute trace of silvering survives, suggesting that the lions would have been silver, on a coloured enamel background. The reverse is plain. The metal has a deep green patina. Harness pendants are discussed in the "Finds Research Group Datasheet 5: Horse harness Pendants" by Nick Griffiths (1986) and he writes that shield shaped pendants normally date from the fourteenth century.
