Fragment of early Anglo-Saxon harness mount made from gilded copper alloy. 6th century.
Crescentic terminal (thickness 1.4mm) with slightly damaged corners and lower edge. Narrowed but thicker (thickness 3.4mm) extension above with two punched annulets directly above, and possibly another punched annulet above them, across which the obect is broken. Traces of gilding all over the face. The reverse is ungilded and undecorated. Length 20.0mm, width of cresent 27.5mm, widt of narrower section 13.64mm, thickness max 3.4mm, weight 3.60g.
It is hard to know the precise form of the mount originally, as these terminals are found on mounts with a variety of shapes. Compare (from graves) Lechlade 180 and Beckford B 12A; from the PAS database, BERK-461026 (Lambourn), DENO-A99AB3 (Barrow-on-Trent), SOMDOR-305381 (Loxton) and WMID-AA7268 (Ilam).
