WEIGHT

Unique ID: SWYOR-C80566

Object type certainty: Probably
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A lead alloy probable weight. The object is conical, and has a hole running vertically through the centre. There are several old dents on the side and base, and a recent scrape. Lead weights are imperfectly understood and cannot normally the attributed to a specific period. It is hoped that increased recording and further study of these objects will allow better understanding in the future. This one weighs 98.2g, which is not far off three ounces. The hole through this example casts some doubt on its function as a standing weight, yet the hole seems too narrow to allow use as a spindle whorl. The object is 36.2mm long, 35.3mm wide and 30.2mm thick. A similar but larger weight with additional holes in illustrated on page 32 of “Lead Weights” by Biggs and Withers (2000).
