A fragment of a cast copper alloy Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends type), Mackreth 2011, 4.l, Plate 48. The wings are semi-cylindrical with wing caps. Each cap has a central perforation which supports a copper alloy axis bar. Around the axis bar the spring is coiled, forming coils which are so corroded it is difficult to count them. From the spring the pin extends, however the pin is missing on this example. There is also the remains of a horizontal bar leading from the spring which is held in place by an integral perforated lug at the junction of the bow head and upper edge of the wings. The wings are undecorated. The bow head is hump-like in profile and decorated with a central vertical groove which continues down the bow. The bow head tapers gradually to form the bow which is oval in section. The bow is broken above the approximate mid point. The break is not recent. The brooch has traces of a mid green patina and measures 18.95mm long, 22.35mm wide and weighs 7.3g. The brooch is a Polden Hill type, which probably dates to c. 80 to 120 AD (Bayley and Butcher, 2004 Roman Brooches in Britain: A technological and Typological Study Based on the Richborough Collection Society of Antiquaries p. 160). Bayley and Butcher go on to comment that the distribution of Polden Hill brooches are concentrated in the West Midlands.
