A cast copper alloy rotary casket key of probable medieval date. The key measures 36.2mm by 12.8mm by 4.4mm and weighs 6.7g. The external diameter of the circular bow is 13.4mm and its central perforation, 6.3mm. The key has a hollow stem with oval cross section and an unelaborate bit with a cleft on each side. A number of similar keys are illustrated in Brian Read's 'Metal Artefacts of Antiquity' (2001, pp. 67, 72, nos. 544-547). These examples have all been dated from the late twelfth to early fourteenth centuries.
