A copper alloy Early Medieval strap end (Thomas Class H, possibly) dating from AD 900 - 1000. This object was originally databased as a Medieval harness pendant. The decorated closed end of the strap end is a large sub-cruciform terminal that comprises four elongated lobes between a saltire (or knot) defined by engraved lines and slight lobed ends that project beyond the four inner angles. Much of the original surface is lost. The terminal extends into a bar which bends backwards slightly. It looks as if it may have split originally, with the front plate now missing, though the break is ancient. There are traces of a rivet through the surviving backplate. This would form the split attachment end. The object has an uneven dark green and brown rough patina but in some places the original surface survives as a smooth, shiny, dark brown patina.
The strapend is 51.3mm long, 30.9mm wide and 3mm thick. 11g.
Compare NMS-784304 which has been published in Rogerson and Ashley (2008, 439-440; fig. 8.43). The description notes that: "The decoration appears to be derived from the Borre style, commonly found on disc brooches such as that from Heckingham, Norfolk, illustrated in Margeson (1997), fig.22".
