BELL

Unique ID: HAMP-92EDC1

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete post-medieval crotal or rumbler bell cast in copper alloy. The upper half is plain and has two sound holes. Of similar proportions are the two sound holes on the lower hemisphere, close to the central casting seam. They are joined together by a slot and are perpendicular to those on the upper half. Either side of the slot the lower half is decorated with a 'sunburst' pattern; the upper hemisphere is plain. Within one half of the 'sunburst' a semicircle can be discerned which bears a letter 'G' and an annulet. The suspension loop is high, rectangular, with a U-shaped perforation. Such lettering within an semicircular field suggests a late post-medieval date (cf. Bailey 1995, 42-43); indeed, the date 1796 was noted when this object was recorded in the field (see below, 'Notes').

Notes:

This record was made at a rally and may thus fall below our usual standards of recording; no weight was noted
