HARNESS PENDANT

Unique ID: SF-951660

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete copper-alloy openwork pendant of medieval date. A similar though more incomplete example has been found at Kings Worthy, Hampshire (see HAMP 1306).

This example measures 33.65mm in length and 17.00mm in width. The suspension loop is set at right angles to the plane of the pendant. The pendant is oval in shape and has a quadruped animal looking backwards portrayed in side profile, which is reminescent in style to the backwards looking animals on late early medieval disc brooches. There is a border of open work holes around the animal. Projecting from the centre of the lower edge of the pendant there is a vertical short shaft, which has a bifurcated terminal.

Steven Ashley has suggested that both pendants seem to be in the style of 12th-century Romanesque art, providing a possible 12th-century date for them.
