Cast copper-alloy knobbed mace fitting which from the weight and the discolouration, which is pale white-green, would appear to contain lead. The item is essentially a hollow cylinder with the internal aperture tapering top to bottom from 19.06mm to 16.18mm in diameter. The external decoration is roughly geometric in design comprising of a central band of 4 blunted lozengifrom pyramids with an interlocking band of 4 blunted half lozengiform pyramids both above and below. This decoration effectively gives the item 4 faces and makes the object appear sub-square in section. Such items are usually assigned to the category of mace but this is in the sense that they are of the ceremonial staff variety of mace rather than the offensive weapon variety. The suggestion has been made that such finds are fittings from ecclesiastical staves but this has not been confirmed. Similar examples are already recorded on the databse with an apparent concentration in the Midlands. This piece measures 30.54mm in height (from the top to bottom of the cylinder) and is 31.02mm at its widest point, including knops.
