Complete cast copper alloy Medieval casket key. The key has a flat circular bow with a diameter of 11.16mm and is circular in cross section measuring 1.89mm wide. There is a worn collar between the bow and the stem, the collar is comprised of two moulded rectangles projecting at 45 degree angles from the base of the bow. The solid subrectangular stem is oval in cross section measuring 4.01mm by 4.68mm, with the projecting tip surviving. The rectangular bit has one cleft each side, the width of the key at this point increases to 8.41mm. The bit is worn, expecially on its lower edge. The total length of the key is 35.65mm, however this is not the keys true length as it has been slightly bent about a third of the length down the stem. The key has a maximum width of 11.16mm and a maximum thickness of 3.98mm. The key has an even red-brown patina with patches of green corrosion. and the surface is slightly worn.
