Silver dress hook comprising triangular pinked backplate with three applied hemispheres with filigree spirals and knops. At the centre, a flower-shaped element made from silver sheet, with dome-headed gilt pin at the centre. This pin attaches the flower element to the backplate with a butterfly clip. The front and top of hook gilt. At the top, a recurving hook soldered onto the backplate; remains of rectangular attachment bar on reverse. 16th Century.
A type commonly recorded through the Treasure Act, see an example 2003 T85 post-medieval silver-gilt dress hook from Duxford, Cambridgeshire, Treasure Annual Report 2003, no. 232.
In terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996 (Dr Dora Thornton, Curator of Renaissance Collections, The British Museum).
