A trade taken farthing produced in Dorchester, Dorset, in 1669. The initials H D may be for Alexander Haviland, mayor of Dorchester in 1669 (Boyne and Williamson 1858, p. 63, no. 38).

Notes:

Trade tokens of this type were produced by local authorities and private traders between 1648-72 to make up for the lack of small change in circulation which had been caused by the cessation of the minting of farthings during the English Civil War. Most were intended to pass for farthings.
