HARNESS MOUNT

Unique ID: CORN-54BEE7

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Gilt copper alloy sheet harness mount with a central perforation for the rivet hole surrounded by a design in the form of an eight-pointed star on the face of the plate. There are the remains of gilding on the star itself, and on the border surrounding it, and blue enamel in the background areas between the star and the border. The mount is diamond-shaped in plan and flat in section, with the central decoration slightly raised beyond the border. Bailey (1993) illustrates a very similar example with red enamelled star and yellow background on page 51, No.3, dated to the later Medieval period. Read (1988) illustrates a lozenge-shaped mount with central rivet on page 68, No.370, dated to the 15th century.
