A complete knapped flint horseshoe scraper, dating to the Late Neolithic period, between 2500 – 2150 BC (length: 41.5mm; width: 40mm; thickness: 10.5mm; weight: 24.2g).

The scraper is sub-circular in shape and has a dark brown/ black colour. On the flat ventral side of the artefact, the bulb of percussion (at the proximal end), eraillure scar and faint ripples or ‘lunettes’ are visible. On the flat dorsal side, there are no arrises and there is heavily retouch on the to the left, right and at the distal end. There is no retouch at the proximal end on the dorsal side. Overall, the artefact is in a slightly worn and good condition.

A similar example is illustrated in Bond, C, J, 2004, ‘Guide to the Identification, Assessment and Recording of Lithics, Version 1’, pages 57 & 207, fig 5.25. Bond also states that the retouched edge on these artefacts ‘tends to be over an extensive area, with emphasis on the distal and/ or the left and right mesial edges. Flank blanks are large, retouch is commonly semi-abrupt, short, parallel and continuous.’
