STRAP FITTING

A post medieval copper alloy sword belt fitting. The fitting consists of a curvilinear plate with a hook at one end. It would have been fitted onto a scabbard strap. The centre area of the plate is sub-triangular with a trilobed area containing a rivet hole projecting from the narrow end, the central lobe being extended to form the hook. The hook curves towards the front of the plate, forming a depth of 10.5mm, and has a globular knop. A suspension loop from the corresponding belt plate survives, attached to the hook. No more of the belt plate survives. At the other end of the sub-triangular centre of the scabbard plate is another trilobed projection, also containing a rivet hole, but the projection is more elongated than at the other end, the central lobe is very triangular, and one of the side lobes is missing. The whole plate is decorated with foliage patterns and is 50.2mm long and 17.3mm wide. There is a large area of corrosion in the centre of the reverse. The fitting dates from the sixteenth or seventeenth century.
