Late Anglo-Saxon composite disc brooch of Weetch type 9. Decoration comprises a central square boss with four surrounding square bosses forming a cross. Each of these bosses appears to have had a circular copper alloy pellet inserted, of which four survive. Between the arms of the cross formed by the square bosses are four small circular depressions, one of which has an irregular perforation (damage). A narrow border is formed around the edge of the brooch, defined by a line of rocker-arm decoration. There is some damage to the edge of the brooch. The surface of the brooch is extremely pitted.
On the reverse of the brooch are the remains of a pin-lug set parallel to the edge of the brooch. A small patch of solder is visible, presumably indicating the location of the catch-plate. A slight hint of iron-staining beside the pin-lug suggests this brooch was fastened by an iron pin. Diameter: 26mm. Weight: 5.44g.
Weetch tentatively dates this type to the 10th century AD.
