Copper alloy knopped mace head. The mace is short and has a broken lip at one end indicative of a shank. The mace is square in cross-section and tapers slightly, as does its central hole. The mace has twelve pyramidal knobs in three rows of four, consisting of four four-sided knobs and eight three-sided knobs (half knobs). The knobs are all very worn however none of them are mis-shapen. There is a brownish patina over most of the surface. There appears to be some iron corrosion around the narrow opening. The dimensions are as follows: Height 27mm, width 38mm, diameter of hole 18mm and weight 91grams Other examples are recorded on the Portable Antiquities Schemes database, many of which are from the East Midlands, particularly Lincolnshire. Their exact function is not known, and it has been suggested that they are eccesiastical staff fittings rather than offensive weapons.
