Groat of Henry VI, annulet coinage (1422-27), weighing 57.2 grains. Mint: Calais Ref: North 1424 This is one of a hoard of 54 coins (26 groats and 28 pennies) ranging from the reigns of Edward I to Edward IV, although most are from the reigns of Henry VI and Edward IV. The groats are generaly well preserved and unclipped, the pennies showing differing degrees of wear, the earliest pieces are particularly worn. The latest coins are three light weight coinage groats of Edward IV, two from the Bristol mint and one from York bearing the sun initial mark. The light coinage dates from 1464 and as no coins of the London mint are present the deposition date for the coins is most likely to be around 1465-6. The coins are all from a period when a silver content of the coinage was maintained at 92.5%. One of the pennies appears to be a cast forgery and may not conform to this standard. The hoard appears to be a currency hoard, most probably hidden in some sort of bag.
