BROOCH

Unique ID: NMS155

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

AE fan-headed or ‘radiate’-headed trumpet brooch, broken flat semi-circular fan-shaped plate with four tiny lobes (remains of chain loop). Part of bow broken immediately below acanthus button. Plate hollowed out into bow, the hollow is flanked by twin pierced lugs for pin and spring. Similar to (with the exception of the arrangement for pin and spring) an example in Hattatt (1987 fig.45, no.968), which was found in East Anglia. The mixture of flat plate and acanthus button is described as being strange and un-paralleled. 2nd century.
