SEAL MATRIX

Unique ID: SOMDOR-6102D2

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A cast copper alloy seal matrix of early fourteenth century date. The vesica-shaped seal measures 30mm by 19mm. The die depicts a tonsured head and the legend reads + S. THOME CAPELL'I (seal of Thomas the Chaplain). It is perhaps worth noting that the first known Vicar of Wedmore was Thomas de Harptree, appointed in 1311, and that the adjoining field to the northwest was part of the Vicar's glebe land, which he might have visited regularly. While it cannot be proven, it is interesting to speculate that this might be the seal of Thomas, Vicar of Wedmore, dropped while visiting his adjacent glebe land. (From a note submitted to Somerset Archaeology, by J. Morris and F. Neale).
