A lead plug or pot mend for a ceramic vessel. On one side is a flat irregular sub oval surface, measuring 20.1mm by 15.18mm. On the other side is a smaller oval plug 16.84mm by 11.44mm. The two plugs are joined by an integral irregular ‘neck’ making the object 11.16mm long. The object weighs 10.30g. Sandwiched between the two plugs is a fragment of the original ceramic vessel. This has a black core that is clearly shell tempered. Dr Paul Sealey kindly suggested that this would date the vessel to the 4th century. Pot mends used melted lead to fill holes in damaged ceramic vessels, allowing the lead to overlap the broken edges.
