Silver shield-shaped commemorative medal. On the obverse is a topographic design of a public building (either a town hall, school or chapel), under which is the legend VAUGHTON BIRM. The reverse bears the legend PRESENTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF ABER & BLAENGWYNFI FOR WAR SERVICE 1914-19. The reverse is hallmarked with the standard mark (i.e. the lion passant), town mark of Birmingham (i.e. anchor in a shield), the year mark of 1919 (i.e. the letter U in a shield) and the maker's stamp of V & S (i.e. Vaughton of Birmingham). The medal contains a small suspension loop. Length 39mm, width 25mm, thickness 2.5mm. Found near Bedwas, Caerphilly.
Notes:
Abergwynfi and Blaengwyfni are two adjacent towns in the Avan valley of the Neath - Port Talbot district of South Wales. The medal was probably commissioned by the local council and issued to the men of Abergwynfi and Blaengwynfni who returned from the Great War. The medal is of particular interest because its obverse side contains a topographical view. Vaughton and Son were die-sinkers and medallists of Birmingham. Philip Vaughton, a gold key and seal maker and later called a jeweller, founded the firm in c.1832. They were makers of all kinds of medals, badges, tickets, challenge cups and shields, vases, salvers and spoons for every kind of sport and competition. The firm merged with the Vaughton Bros. firm in 1909.
