Cruciform cast copper alloy fitting decorated on one side with an incised fleur-de-lis design against a hatched background and on the other side with an incised central checkerboard design made up of nine squares with a simple border against a hatched background. The fitting forms an equal-sided Maltese type cross, remnants of a flash line suggest that it was cast in a two-part mould. A central perforation runs through the longitudinal (as defined by the fleur-de-lis motif) axis of the fitting. The perforation is slightly worn at the base of the fitting. Although no close parallels can be found, the style of decoration is consistent with a medieval date. It is possible some form of harness pendant-fitting. Close study of the ends of the unperforated arms reveals the ends of circular-sectioned stubs which may be the remains of bar-like arms that extended out from the fitting in a manner similar to a purse bar. Dimensions 27mm x 27.5mm x 6mm.
