White metal ( abase alloy containing a high proportion of tin or pewter) Edwardian souvenir medal commemorating both the Coronation of Edward VII and the laying of a foundation stone of an unknown building on 13th May 1902. The medal has been perforated so that it can be worn on a ribbon. Diameter 39mm, thickness 4mm.

There were more medals struck to commemorate the Coronation of Edward VII than any other event. Originally scheduled for June but, due to the poor health of the King, postponed until August the coronation ceremony took place at Westminster Abbey. The fashion for cheap souvenir medals was established prior to the reign of Victoria (1837-1901); however, during her reign their popularity increased. The Birmingham manufactories perfected a bright silver alloy, unimaginatively named white metal, which had a superior looking rich surface when struck. White metals were inexpensive to make, the metal being soft and easy to strike and the bright surface giving scope for a fine array of designs (Fearon 1986, 3).
