A Medieval copper alloy zoomorphic spout from a vessel, either a ewer or a laver (15th – early 16th century). Tubular spout, cast in the form of a dog's head with open mouth and the spout protrudes from the open mouth (internal diameter: 6.12mm), and downwardly curved, long, pointed neck. The head has a flat-topped nose, prominent brow, and rectangular ears that protrude slightly above the head - the eyes are not modelled. The neck has an oval cross-section, then becomes open at the top, and curves sharply downwards. There is a central low and narrow longitudinal ridge along the top of the head and neck (but not the nose or spout) - possible casting line? File marks on the rim of the opening at the neck. The copper alloy has a dark green patina. See J.M. Lewis "Bronze Aquamaniles and Ewers" (1987, Finds Research Group Datasheet 7, pp4-5, fig 8a) for a similar spout on a pedestal-base ewer from Cardiff Castle moat, dated to the 15th century. Mills "Medieval Artefacts" (1999, p.110, NM.292) publishes another similar spout, noting they are from priest's washing bowls (lavers), and dating them to the 15th century. Similar to DENO-1978E6 (www.findsdatabase.org.uk). Dimensions: length: 67.62mm; width: 57.06mm; weight: 66.30g.
