BUTTON

Unique ID: NMGW3103

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Lead, or lead alloy (pewter), slightly domed button with a large attachment loop. The button is decorated with a moulded quatrefoil design. Diameter 14mm, weight 5.8 grams. Although lead is a soft metal, and therefore inherently unsuitable for use as a button, the ease with which it could be moulded ad its relative cheapness led to it being used for such a purpose (Bailey 1997, 38). Study of the flash lines on this example suggest that it was cast in a three-part mould. Comparable lead buttons are known from thirteenth century contexts in London (i.e. Egan 1991, 274, no.1376, fig.178) although this example is more closely paralleled by a fifteenth century example (Egan 1991, 274, no.1381, fig.178).
