Medieval lead pilgrim’s ampulla of 14th to early 16th century date, c. 1350 – 1530 The ampulla is near-complete, missing the side loops and slight damage to the reverse face. The ampulla has a slightly distorted surviving length of 49.52mm and weighs 33.9g. The rim of the ampulla has a width of 26.78mm and remains closed. The sides of the neck are straight and converge towards the body. The remnants of the side loops are evident at the base of the neck. The base of the neck is defined by a horizontal band containing diagonal lines. The obverse of the ampulla is decorated with the scallop-shell (representing pilgrimage) with fine, closely spaced grooves and of Spencer (1990) Type II. The reverse has a central circle, with no evidence of internal decoration. The sides are enhanced with diagonal lines. The ampulla has a maximum width across the body of 28.94mm.
