WEIGHT

Unique ID: NMGW136

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Free-standing, conical lead, or lead alloy, weight. The top of the weight is decorated with cast concentric circles. Maximum diameter of weight 12mm, thickness 8mm, weight 9.1 grams.

Notes:

The function of lead weights such as these is not certain; they have been identified as unofficial weights used by traders (Egan 1998, 322). Crudely cast lead weights are difficult to date; however, the relative quality of the casting suggests that this weight is possibly of post-medieval or early modern date.
