A copper-alloy buckle frame from a medieval buckle. The frame is missing its bar and is substantially squashed. The bar was originally offset and narrowed and an expanded lobe survives at either end. The outer edge flares to 12 mm wide in the centre. The outer edge is set at an angle, giving a large area for decoration. Traces of this decoration remain, although it almost all worn away. However, traces of curvilinear grooves can be seen which retain some adhesive for gilding or enameling. This shape of buckle frame was popular in the 13th century, when it was used for Limoges-style enamelled designs.
