An incomplete New Forest Ware jug of Roman date. Approximate diameter of body girth, when complete, would have been about 160-170mm. Weight 214.88g. This upper part of a ceramic wheel-made vessel has a complete rim, a handle and about half of the body. The rim is slightly everted and has an outer diameter of 54.0mm. The neck flares outwards gently towards the body. The strap-handle has a maximum width of 15.5mm and joins the main part of the vessel just below the rim and just below the neck. The outer surface has metallic purplish sheen as aresult of being in a marine environment (not the remains of a purple slip). The neck is decorated with fairly equally spaced vertical burnished lines. These are about 5.0mm apart. The body is decorated with roughly horizontal circumferential burnished lines that merge together. The inner face of the vessel is matt grey (Munsell Color Grey 2.5YR 5/N5/). The surviving part of this vessel is in good condition and all the breaks are fresh. The vessel was found in the inter-tidal zone and has the remains of marine organic growth attached to the outer and inner surfaces.
