Copper alloy 2nd century Roman Headstud brooch. The brooch is quite worn but is complete apart from the pin. The wings have square ends and have a line of cast decoration running vertically down each side. On the top of the head there is a curved fin and at the bak of the brooch there are cylindrical wings and the remains of a hinged pin. Below the fin at the top of the bow there is a large circular stud - hence the 'headstud' classification; this is cast into a ring and dot design and would have been decoratively enameled although this does not survive. The bow tapers down to a worn moulded foot. Similar types of brooch can be seen in Hattatts 'Visual Catalogue' Fig. 191.
