BROOCH

Unique ID: NLM753

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

End off foot missing, also no pin, but Fe corrosion. Stamped crescents. Helen Geake writes: The original entry in the classification field for this record was 'Small long brooch'. The attached image, however, is of a probable cruciform brooch with rectangular headplate decorated with punchmarks down either side of a raised central panel and also down the outer vertical edge of the wings. There are three flattish half-round knobs. The bow is substantial and the foot begins with a flat area (with two more punchmarks down either edge?) then two incised transverse lines, then a short length with bevelled edges, then a half-round area with two mouldings each decorated with incised lines. The rest of the foot is missing. This brooch should date to the early Anglo-Saxon period, probably to the sixth century AD. Because of this, the entry in the classification field has been changed to read 'cruciform'.
