A worn and corroded lead alnage seal of early 17th to 18th century AD date. A similar seal is can be seen in G. Egan's "Lead cloth seals and related items in the British Museum" (1994; pp. 178; no. 132) and, it is suggested, may be of Charles II period. The seal consists of two sub-circular discs joined at one end by a folded connecting strip. One of the upper faces has a raised design showing a lion rampant above a crown. The numbers I and I/2 - the subsidy rate in pence - are located either side of the design. The reverse shows the head of a male monarch facing right. Both designs are surrounded by a circular border made up of several closely-spaced dashes. The piece measures 16.5mm long, 13.9mm high and 2.5mm thick; it weighs 2.98g.
