Copper alloy hollow cast knobbed mace head with integral cylindrical shank. The macehead is 46mm in diameter and 52mm in length. The socket is 23mm in length, and 23mm in diameter at the bottom, tapering to 18mm at the top. The shank has a single rivet hole in the side, 2mm in diameter. The mace has twelve pyramidal knobs in three rows of four, consisting of four four-sided knobs and eight three-sided knobs (half knobs). Three out of four of the top row of knops are very worn, being on average 11mm in length from the inside of the socket, compared to the length of 15mm seen in the complete upper knop. All of the central row knops show slight signs of wear, whilst only one of the lower knops has any wear. This would be in keeping with the object being used for hitting or knocking in a swinging motion. Wood fragments are present inside the hole. Only a few examples of knobbed mace heads from England have so far been found. A parallel to this piece was found in the cesspit of Dryslwyn Castle in Wales, believed to date from the 1287 siege of that castle.
