A copper alloy Early Medieval button brooch, with surface gilding. The brooch is circular and has a raised lip around the circumference. The decoration is in the form of a stylised male face with moustache. The nose / moustache divides the surface into four areas: two wider side areas containing two concentric semicircular lines and an inner dot (possibly representing eyes), an area enclosed by a semi-circular shape with a central dot (possibly representing a mouth) and a smaller area containing one curved line. On the reverse the brooch is flat apart from the worn remains of a lug for attachment of a pin across the diameter of the brooch. Gilding remains on the upper surface only.
