A cast copper alloy brooch. The wings of the brooch are semi-cylindrical, with no wing caps. In the centre of the upper edge of the wings there is a small integral rectangular protrusion which was probably originally a hook. The wings are decorated with a pair of horizontal grooves at the terminals. The spring, pin, and axis bar are missing. The bow head is hump-like and in profile it rises above the upper edge of the wings. There is a ā€˜Vā€™ shape formed from the reverse of the bow head and the hook. The bow head is decorated with a pronounced central vertical ridge with a fine vertical central groove. This ridge continues to the length of the bow. The bow is sub-triangular in section and tapers to a blunt point. The catch plate is incomplete and is missing its curved edge. The surface of the brooch has a well developed dark grey/green patina. The brooch measures 39.97mm long from the bow head to the bow foot, and 18.91mm wide across the wings. It weighs 8.84g. The object is a Colchester Two-Piece Brooch, a Dolphin type which dates to the late 1st to 2nd century AD (Bayley, J. and Butcher, S. 2004 Roman Brooches in Britain: A Technological and Typological Study based on the Richborough Collection Society of Antiquaries)
