Complete flint blade like flake of probable late Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date (4500 – 2900BC). The flint tool (probably a scraper) is sub-oval (tear drop shaped) in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. The bulb of percussion is complete. The two long sides flare toward the base of the flake and the end is knapped into a broad semi-circular edge. The lower part of the two long sides and the end of the blade have been retouched / reworked. The retouch is most extensive on the broad end of the flake and on the left hand edge. These two areas have a higher density of flake scars. The flint is a mid grey colour and has been slightly abraded in the ploughsoil. The flake measures 48mm length, 26.2mm width, is 7.5mm thick and weighs 7.3 grams.

Flint tools from Shropshire are relatively rare compared to other areas of the country. This flint is likely to have come from a riverine or glacial source if made locally as a large scale natural flint source does not exist in the county. The flake is most likely to have been used as an end scraper – these are a utility tool common to both the late Mesolithic and the Neolithic period. The blade like nature of this example would suggest a date toward the end of the Mesolithic / beginning of the Neolithic.
