COIN

Unique ID: KENT-338E94

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Silver, penny of Aethelstan II of East Anglia, aka Guthrum (he changed his name when baptised after defeat to Alfred at Edington, Wilts), mint unknown, moneyer: Abenel.

Notes:

The coin shows evidence for pecking, small incisions made with a knife to check the quality of the silver, with 8 such marks seen on the reverse. This is often seen on Viking-Age coins, although is more commonly associated with Scandinavian finds. A number of English hoards also exhibit pecking, but the overall numismatic evidence suggests that this was most likely undertaken either in Dublin or non-coin using areas of England.
