A cast copper-alloy fragment from the forked spacer plate of medieval composite buckle. The fragment has broken away from the rest of the spacer at three points: the frame, the pin notch and the prong. The frame was presumably D-shaped and may have had a protruding lip. In cross-section it is the shape of a triangle with rounded corners: the reverse and inner faces are flat and the outer face bevelled. The spacer was moulded on the lateral plane either side of the pin constriction. As it develops into the prong it goes through two stepped constrictions. As well as being broken the prong has also been bent upwards. Comparison with complete composite buckles suggests that the object of which this fragment formed part would have been anything up to 60mm or more in length with a frame approximately 27mm across. Such buckles date from the later 14th century to earlier 15th century.
