WEIGHT

Object type certainty: Certain

Cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable medieval date (1200 - 1500). The weight is sub-rectangular in plan and cross section. The front face of the weight is decorated with a series of three irregular cast pellets arranged in a line. This design is contained within a rectangular raised border. The reverse is decorated with a series of three punched concentric ovals. Both faces are relatively flat and the edges are beveled on both faces. The weight measures 25.1mm length, 17.9mm width is 4.7mm thick and weighs 14.19 grams or 0.5005ozs (219 grains). The weight is a mid grey white colour with an even but abraded patina that covers all surfaces. It has been marked and abraded in the soil; this has caused the weight to become slightly asymmetrical. The half ounce weight may suggest it was used as a trade or apothecaries weight.
