Roman snake finger ring Date: Circa late 2nd century AD Description: A complete silver snake-ring formed from a simple penannular ring with confronted snake-head terminals, the tips of which just meet. These terminals are stamped out in low relief and the reptile's head is not very naturalistic but depicted by a pattern of swelling curves and lines, the scales are depicted around the edges of the heads via V-shaped notches. Discussion: This snake ring is of Johns Type Bii, there are numerous parallels from the Snettisham jeweller's hoard, (Johns, 1997, 36-37 and 100-105, nos243-274). Dimensions: This finger ring is 22.7mm in width and 20.6mm in length externally and 16.6mm in width and 14mm in length internally, the hoop is 3.9mm in width and flares to 9mm in width across the snake head terminals, it is 7.70g in weight. The precious metal content of this finger ring fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10 %.
