PALSTAVE

Unique ID: IOW-4E6D44

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Fragment of a cast copper alloy palstave of Middle Bronze Age date (2500 BC – 700 BC). Length 20mm, width 26mm and maximum thickness 10mm. Weight 16.33g. The fragment is the butt end of the implement. The surviving part of the septum tapers from an old break to the pointed end. At each side is a flat faced flange. On the surface of the old break is a circular depression which is probably a gas bubble cavity, a casting imperfection. The fragment is in fair condition and has a patchy light brown patina on all faces. A brief description of the development of palstaves and axes of the Bronze Age period is given in Savory, H. N. 1980, pages 43-49.
