Copper alloy annular brooch of quoit type, internal diameter 25mm, external diameter 39mm, thickness 2mm, weight 6.16g. This is a flat annular plate with a hole for the pin. On the opposite side, on the inside edge, is a small tapering rectangular notch flanked by raised lips 5mm long and 2mm wide. The tip of the pin could pass through the notch when securing the brooch a garment, and then be held in place by the raised lips. The decoration covers the upper surface, comprising of two recessed rectangular lines, each running around one half of the surface, there is a recess running down the middle of each of these lines. The surface was tinned.
The annular brooch is associated with Anglian territories, the highest concentration is in the eastern part of the country, but examples have been recorded a far south as Kent and north into Yorkshire and extending to the west along the upper Thames valley. Excavated examples demonstrate that there were worn exclusively by women and normally in pairs. The system of 'notch-and-stops' defines this brooch as a quoit brooch, a version of the annular brooch. The date range for these is 450-575.
